Community-supported, on purpose

Writer Roll Call is an independent site run by one writer. It's free to use, and the plan is to keep it that way: no ads, no analytics trackers, no selling your data, no paywall between you and your own writing log. What it costs to run is covered by the community that uses it — and by the founder's own pocket where the community hasn't yet.

What it actually costs

The honest ledger: a small application server, a managed database with real backups, the domain, and the email service that sends verification links and password resets. Together that's on the order of a nice hardcover book every month — more as more writers join, since email and database capacity scale with signups. Contest prizes are funded separately, out of the founder's pocket.

If you'd like to help

The best support is free: use the site, tell a writing friend, share a milestone page when you finish something. Word of mouth is the whole marketing budget here, and it's the kind that fits this place.

Down the road

As the community grows, so do the bills, and eventually there will be quiet, optional ways to help carry them: a donations page for anyone who wants to help with the hosting — gifts, not purchases; no perks, no tiers, nothing unlocks — and perhaps an affiliate tag on the retail links authors choose to show on their public pages, earning the site a small commission at no cost to the buyer or the author. None of it is live today. When any of it is, it will be announced on the updates page and disclosed right where it happens — and the promises above don't move: free to use, no ads, no paywall.
